Interactive Albums: Newest iTunes Application

1 September 2008

Many rumours have been circulating about iTunes’ status regarding album sales. Some say it gives several benefits, while others say it is a burden.

Rock and Roll Jesus is the newest album of rock idol, Kid Rock, which had over 1.7 million copies sold. However, it was not made available in iTunes. The same thing also happened last week, when Warner Bros. removed the new album of Estelle from iTunes in the United States, hoping that it can have more physical sales. However, the plan did not turn out to be what they have expected.

Apple is making its move before this minor practise becomes a major trend in the music industry. The Music Week said the company is currently working with Snow Patrol, a rock band, for a new application on iPod and iPod Touch that will feature their album and will include many videos, album art, and lyrics. These features are still difficult to search online. Most of the sites may contain several inaccurate lyrics and pop-ups, especially those that appear in search engines.

Snow Patrol will be the first to have an application for an interactive album, featuring their fifth release, A Hundred Million Suns. The application will be released next month, ahead of the album’s launch, and will be available online for download.

Many people hope that this would become a standard practise for releasing new albums. This is necessary since one of the biggest losses in the evolution from long play record albums to CDs to the recent digital files was gradually eliminating lyrics sheets.
